Mission accomplished! Fempower just completed one of their summer sessions at the Hillview Branch Library! This camp was a theater and speech intensive so girls learned everything from how to write a good quality speech to the rules of the stage. We also had incredible bonding and support sessions so girls could get advice from one another and realize they’re never alone.
Neha had the idea for Fempower from her own experience of dealing with bullying, racism, and self-esteem issues. However, with her exposure to theater and speech and her multiple theater and social awareness summer camps successfully run in the past, Neha recognized the need for a unique program like Fempower to help young girls who struggled with anything from stagefright, anxiety, like herself. Neha identified the need for a safe outlet for girls to learn to discuss their issues and express themselves with confidence, and courage. Since her bullying incident, she has taught multiple successful summer camps, including Lynbrook’s annual Speech and Debate Summer Camp that hosts 160+ students annually. She has gone on to win numerous national and international level speech awards for the varsity level and is accredited by the Trinity College of London and London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts in Performance and Communication. She currently serves as her high school Speech and Debate President, her school’s largest volunteer club- CSF’s Vice President, and she is an official member of the International Thespian troupe as a result of her dedication to theater. She has professionally recorded advertisements for the radio, worked with Broadway personnel, and acted in plays with audiences of over 1100 people. Neha hopes to grow Fempower to empower girls globally in an affordable but impactful way.
Maya Shah
Maya immediately identified the need for a program that motivated girls, who struggled with confidence, to be a leader in their communities. She recognized that although the Bay Area has many highly motivated teens with access to a great eduation in top school districts, lower income neighborhoods like ones in East San Jose still struggle with maintaining low drop-out rates. She saw Fempower as a way to encourage girls and raise their self esteem in order to pursue more opportunities within school, stay focused, work hard and continue to empower others around them to do the same. Maya can be seen participating in a wide variety of activities in and outside of school. Inside school, she challenges herself with a rigorous course load and has a passion to expand her knowledge beyond her core subjects with courses such as AP Computer Science and Photography. She has won numerous California state awards within DECA, a competitive business club, and continued to spread her knowledge in business through fulfilling her role as Cluster-Captain of Entrepreneurship. She also works at a local startup, Numo Broth, as their Event-Coordinator to promote their product in conjunction with a healthy living style. Additionally, she serves on the Advisory Board of Saratoga Library and acts as a liaison between teens and the library to promote it as a safe environment and plan events for teens in the area to meet and connect. Finally, she continues to pursue her passion of film through interning with PermaGrin Film Studios, creating promotional video material for her dance school and creating her own short films. With Maya’s background in both business and computer science, she continues to help Fempower expand its reach in the community and maintain its online presence. She hopes to use her film knowledge to also release online teaching material that's easily accessible.
